BARCELONA, 20th July 2020. BME has joined Barcelona Tech City as a Global Partner. The alliance with BME strengthens Barcelona Tech City’s commitment to the Fintech sector, one of the main financial players in the Spanish and European market. This is a sign of its support for innovative businesses of the sector.

The agreement allows the creation of a new technological and financial epicenter in Barcelona. The new Barcelona Tech City Fintech Hub will initially occupy about 1,000 sqm in addition to setting down common spaces in the Passeig de Gràcia 19 building. This Fintech Hub will become Pier 05 of the Urban Tech Campus project.

The Fintech Hub will host companies, entrepreneurs and investors linked to the financial and technological sector. It will become a workspace for startups, investors, venture capital and traditional banking or insurance entities. The goal is to create an optimal environment that stimulates and creates synergies throughout the entire value chain of the sector.

The Hub also aims to facilitate startup’s access to different sources of capital markets and in consequence consolidate its growth. BME will make its knowledge and experience available to companies to make them grow through its various market infrastructures, such as the Spanish stock markets, Mercado Alternativo Bursátil (MAB) or the pre-market environment initiative.

Due to the current health situation, the incorporation of the new space to the Urban Tech Campus is scheduled for 2021.

In words of Javier Hernani, Chairman of BME: “This alliance allows BME to be closer to companies anchored in trends and offering disruptive value-added services. This expands BME’s options to increase the number of companies present in its markets, participate in useful technological solutions for its business purposes, and evaluate technologies that can be incorporated into its range of services. It perfectly complements our initiative for startups in the pre-market environment initiatives. BME supports Barcelona’s positioning as a leading ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship worldwide and is an initiative that is perfectly aligned with the innovative projects and technological hubs of the SIX group, of which we are now part of.”

For Barcelona Tech City, having BME as a Global Partner is an important step to consolidate a benchmark sector as the Fintech, and provide all companies in the ecosystem with access to better sources of financing. Miguel Vicente, Chairman of Barcelona Tech City, claims that “the agreement with BME offers us the opportunity to explore new financing alternatives for our startups. The Pre-Market Environment and MAB BME’s initiatives are growth opportunities to be considered for companies in the ecosystem. Pier 05 is an important step in the consolidation of the Association’s Urban Tech Campus project. Collaboration with BME must allow us to work on training aspects that complement the current offer of the city”. As for his side, Miquel Martí, CEO of the Association, adds that ““this projects has its origin in a fintech event organized by the Departament d’Economia of the Generalitat de Catalunya and it’s one more example of the synergies between players and of the public-private collaboration that we consider key for the development of Barcelona as a Tech Hub”.
